A 50-year-old man checked into the emergency room at Tongji Hospital with internal bleeding. He had a severely damaged stomach wall, where doctors found part of an old chopstick. The patient, who identified himself only as “Wang” told doctors that he swallowed the chopstick 28 years prior. Remarkably, he not only knowingly swallowed it (he says it was because of “extreme stress”) but after doing so decided to just leave it there and not do anything about it.
The remaining part of the chopstick rotted and over time cut into his stomach leaving the man in critical condition. It had warped so much over the years that doctors couldn’t remove it from his throat. They had to cut him open to pull out the utensil. Doctors said that he recovered just fine.
